Holy Orders
The Sacrament of Holy Orders is the sacred calling through which men are ordained to serve the Church as deacons, priests, or bishops. Rooted in the ministry of Christ and the apostles, Holy Orders is a lifelong commitment to preaching the Gospel, celebrating the sacraments, and shepherding the People of God.
Through the laying on of hands and the prayer of consecration, a man is configured to Christ in a special way—empowered by the Holy Spirit to act in persona Christi, or “in the person of Christ,” especially in the celebration of the Eucharist and the other sacraments. It is both a profound gift and a great responsibility, lived in service, prayer, and love.
Discerning a vocation to Holy Orders begins with prayer and reflection, often supported by spiritual direction and pastoral guidance. Those discerning are invited to learn more about the call to priesthood or diaconate within the Diocese of Syracuse.
